The Bell Pro Star FIM Helmet is coming in at the top of Bellâs range for sport riders. The helmet comes with Bellâs unique flex system, comes with improved aerodynamics, is FIM certified for racing, and even includes tear off posts to get that full racing orientation. Before diving deeper into our review another thing to note is that this helmet is coming as the top of 3 variations of the Star line.
The Pro and Bell Race Star Flex are both designed fully for track riding, though only the Pro Star can be used in competitions, and you also have the Bell Star DLX MIPS, which is designed for upright street riding. Either way, the helmet is getting that flex system for rotational impacts, 5 outer shell sizes for an ideal fit and shape. With this FIM certified version of the helmet, which means Bell are throwing their hat into the ring with AGV, Shark, and Arai for commercially available FIM helmets.
So, with a recommended retail price of about 900 Euros, or 1060 USD, the Bell Full-Face Helmet will be competing with the AGV Pista GP RR, Shoei X-Spirit 3, Arai RX-7V, Shark Race-R Pro GP, HJC RPHA 11 Carbon, and the X-Lite X-803 RS Ultra Carbon.
Material
The Bell Pro Star FIM Motorcycle Helmet is fully constructed out of Bellâs TeXtreme carbon fiber shell, which is actually coming from an outside company for even better quality and construction. However, you do also have the option of the Bell Race Star Flex DLX, made of Bellâs 3K carbon fiber and the Bell Star DLX MIPS, made of Bellâs Tri-Matrix composite. The helmet is coming in 3 sizes (S, M, and L) since these have passed the rigorous FIM safety standard.
Lastly, the helmet is ECE 22.05 certified and the regular Bell Race Star earned 5/5 stars from SHARP. The Pro Star has also been tested in a state of the art wind tunnel for optimum aerodynamics while in a tucked position.
Ventilation
For airflow, the Bell Pro Star Helmet comes with a large vent in the chin operated by a switch and there is even a hidden interior chin vent cover that you just pull out to bring air into the helmet. In the brow, there is another sliding vent with a third up top, which is also adjustable.
Lastly, the hot air will escape out another outlet at the top of the head and underneath the spoiler. To further help the helmetâs ventilation system the Flex energy management system in the helmet allows for improved airflow throughout.
Visor
The visor of the Bell Pro Star FIM is an Optical Class 1 Panovision visor. This means that you get maximum visibility with special cutouts along the chin and that the visor is distortion free. Since this is a race helmet, the visor also includes a set of tear-off posts.
Bell have also made removing the visor very easy, with a clever quick release mechanism where all you do is push in on the button on the side and slide forward to release the catch. You do this on both sides, and to put it back, you just slide it back until it clicks into place.
Liner
Just as weâre getting a well-thought-out exterior construction, weâre getting the same high-quality interior. This means that the helmetâs Virus Cool Jade interior is removable, washable, and anti-bacterial. And the material has also been fused with Jade to always give you that cool feel inside. Though both the Race and Pro Star helmets include this liner, the starter Race Star uses a slightly less advanced XStatic XT2 silver treated liner.
To remove the liner, you are getting emergency quick release magnefusion cheek pads, which means theyâre held in by magnets and can quickly be removed by emergency services. In addition to these pads, you are also getting a double D-ring chin strap with a magnetic closure and the same CoolJade material for the covers.
With the interior removed, helmet unique safety feature comes to light: The Flex impact liner. Using a three-layer liner made of three difference materials the Flex liner manages different impact forces at different speeds and rotational impact energies.
Summary
The Bell Pro Star FIM is showing all of the things that we like to see in a helmet. Not only is it coming with plenty of features, but an incredible amount of safety focused design with a 3-piece Flex liner as well as ECE and FIM racing certifications, all of which make it top notch for high-speed racing.
